Challenge: Server monitoring in commercial and residential premises
Companies manage important data on servers that they access constantly. If one of these servers experiences a problem and it goes unnoticed, it can have far-reaching consequences for the company. But monitoring the miniserver also makes sense in vacation homes. If there are any network problems, they would go unnoticed until the next time you stay there. Therefore, server monitoring is essential.
Solution: Implementation of server monitoring
In this use case, we assume the following server monitoring scenario:
The availability of four servers is monitored. As soon as one of the servers is offline for a predefined period of 30 seconds, this information is automatically written to a log file. Additionally, an alert chain is triggered, and the relevant persons are contacted in a maximum of 10 cycles: the IT manager, IT deputy, IT department head, and CEO.
These calls can be deactivated by pressing 1 on your smartphone. This will deactivate the alarm chain. From this point on, it's up to the technician to check the server and perform manual maintenance.
With Loxone, server monitoring is implemented as follows:
The Miniserver pings all four servers every 10 seconds to check if they are reachable. If one of the servers doesn't respond within 10 seconds, the Miniserver makes five more pings every 30 seconds. If the Miniserver still doesn't receive a ping, the alarm chain is triggered. All this information is written to the log file (serverstatus.log).
In Loxone Config, server monitoring is implemented with a ping block for each server. The server's ping address is stored in each ping block. This block is responsible for pinging the server every 10 seconds. The status block defines the notification that should appear as soon as one of the servers is no longer accessible. The people who should be notified in the event of the server being unavailable are defined in the alert chain block.
